Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed serious concerns about the rising threat of ‘deepfake’ technology, calling it one of the biggest challenges for India. Speaking at a BJP event in Delhi, he highlighted the potential chaos caused by the misuse of artificial intelligence (AI) to create deceptive deepfake content.

PM Modi emphasized the need for both citizens and the media to stay vigilant and informed to counter the misuse of AI, especially in the creation of misleading deepfake videos. This comes after an in-depth investigation by India Today into the dangers of deepfakes, particularly their impact on electoral processes.

The Prime Minister referred to a deepfake video circulating online that showed him participating in the Garba dance. While acknowledging the video as realistic, he clarified that he hasn’t done Garba since his youth. Further fact-checking by Indian Paper Ink revealed that the person in the video was an actor, Vikas Mahante, not the PM.

PM Modi says, ” …There is a challenge arising because of Artificial Intelligence and deepFake…a big section of our country has no parallel option for verification…people often end up believing in deepfakes and this will go into a direction of a big challenge…we need to educate people with our programmes about Artificial Intelligence and deepfakes, how it works, what it can do, what all challenges it can bring and whatever can be made out if it…I even saw a video of me doing ‘Garba’…”

PM Modi’s warning underscores the growing threat of deepfake content, where realistic but false videos can be created. As the trend rises, with even actors like Kajol and Katrina Kaif falling victim, the Prime Minister’s call for awareness highlights the importance of collectively addressing the potential misuse of AI technology in the digital era.
